CHELATION THERAPY
What is Chelation Therapy? Chelation (key-lay-shun) therapy is the process by which toxic chemicals and metals are removed from the body via the blood stream. An amino acid called EDTA (ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid) is usually used as the binder with vitamin C as a free radical scavenger; multiple vitamins and mineral supplements are also given by an intravenous route. A small needle is placed in the arm and the solution is infused into the vein or the course of several hours. How does it work? Chelating molecules (binders) are infused into the blood stream. These agents bind to the detrimental molecules and metals and allow the body to excrete them in the urine. Urination is increased temporarily while the toxins are removed. The binders also remove free radicals from the blood, preventing them from damaging the arteries and other structures. This infusion process takes anywhere from 1 to 3 hours depending upon the patient and the illness being treated. During this time you will be sitting in a comfortable chair and will be monitored by a technician or registered nurse, supervised by a physician or physician assistant. Treatments are given 1 to 2 times per week initially then monthly as needed. What is a free radical and why should I want to get rid of it? Basically a free radical is a waste product that is produced in the body. If not removed it can cause damage to the normal functioning of the body. Technically, a free radical is an atom or molecule, which is unstable due to missing a paired electron in its outer layer. To become stable the electron must be replaced. Free radicals react with neighboring atoms or molecules by taking their electrons. Upon losing electrons needed for stability, the neighboring molecules may become free radicals themselves. Chain reactions may occur. Excess free radical activity leads to pathological molecular, functional and structural changes. They lead to abnormal cell function and/or cell death. Depending upon the site of free radical damage, various disease processes are begun. Chelation removes excess free radicals by binding to them. This prevents further cell damage and/or death and can help the body to heal itself. Who should have Chelation? After age 30 toxic metals and free radical damage starts causing the diseases of aging. Chelation is preventative medicine to reverse disease processes already begun, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, atherosclerosis, diabetes mellitus, chronic fatigue, memory loss etc. It is also used in anti-aging to prevent plaque from forming in the arteries decreasing the blood flow to the brain and other organs. How long does it take to feel the benefits? Often there are improvements in memory and well being as soon as the 2nd treatment, however, severe arteriosclerosis can take between 20 and 40 treatments to notice the significant benefit. Many conditions can benefit from Chelation. The most common ones are: arteriosclerosis, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, hypercholesterolemia, emphysema, congestive heart failure, dementia, hypertension, impotence, macular degeneration, osteoporosis, Parkinson’s disease, leg circulation and many more. Ask your doctor if this would help you. What if I’ve already had bypass surgery or angioplasty? As you know these procedures help only the arteries operated on. Often times symptoms return necessitating further surgery. Chelation benefits all the arteries and may prevent further symptoms due to narrowed arteries such as angina, leg pain, stroke, memory loss and shortness of breath. Do I have to give up my routine medical care? Routine medical care is usually continued, at least initially. For example, in the case of medical care involving cardiovascular drugs, Chelation is used ideally to correct biochemical imbalances that lead to the need for drugs. As underlying causes are eased, the need for drugs is reduced. The reduction in prescription drug costs may pay for the treatments. Can the benefits be measure? Yes, angiography and other tests can show increased blood flow after Chelation therapy. How much does it cost? Chelation therapy is a form of Alternative Medicine and is not covered by medical insurance. We will give you a receipt that you may use on your income tax return for credit. The cost per treatment is $120, which must be paid at the time of service unless other arrangements are made in advance. Where can I get Chelation Therapy? Therapy is available throughout the United States. Special clinics have been set up and are run by MDs and DOs. We provide this service in our office by special arrangement.
